rum

Rum lovers around the world owe a great debt to a simple plant: sugar cane. Hundreds of years ago, there was a sugar craze in Europe, and colonies were established around the Caribbean to make the sweet commodity. But the production of sugar creates a lot of byproducts—namely, molasses. There wasn’t much use for the thick, sticky, sweet substance until it was discovered that molasses could be fermented and then distilled. The alcohol quickly became popular with pirates, sailors and America’s founders.

Bacardí

February 4, 1862. The Bacardí family, led by Don Facundo Bacardí Massó, buy a distillery in Santiago de Cuba. They throw away the rule book and make their own unique blends with a revolutionary rum-making process that would change the way rum was made forever.

In Cuba, bats are considered lucky. When Doña Amalia Bacardí spotted fruit bats in the distillery, she insisted that a bat should appear on every bottle. Has our little mascot helped us survive and succeed against the odds? We’ll never know – but the bat is here to stay.

Captain Morgan

It wasn’t all fun and games, as he was first bestowed the title of Captain at the tender age of 27, in 1662 when he took control of his maiden ship. Things took a turn for the worse, however, when Henry Morgan was imprisoned by Charles II in 1672.

But as was always the Captain’s way, he turned things around in style, being knighted by the very same king just a year later. So, after 1673 he was forever known as Sir Henry Morgan.

Malibu

Nothing beats an original. But Malibu isn’t just an original, it’s sunshine in a bottle with a smooth fresh flavor. That’s why it’s the world’s best-selling coconut flavored Caribbean rum.
